Location and classification
Mönchberg is a vineyard site in Stetten, a district of Kernen im Remstal, in the wine-growing region Württemberg. The documented sub-sections Berge, Gehrnhalde, Öde Halde and Schalksberg are located at an altitude of about 300 to 350 metres.
Topography and soils
Berge faces south and has a slope gradient of around 40 percent. Gehrnhalde falls by about 25 percent to the south to south-east, while Schalksberg is oriented east to south-east. The soils include, depending on the sub-section, Bunten Mergel, Schilfsandstein and Bunte Mergel; in addition, Gipskeuper and Kieselsandstein are documented.
Classified sub-sections
The four sub-sections are classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. Berge comprises 4.08 hectares, Gehrnhalde 3.32 hectares, Schalksberg 3.82 hectares and Öde Halde 1.75 hectares. As classified grape varieties, Lemberger is listed for Berge, Gehrnhalde and Schalksberg, and Spätburgunder for Öde Halde.
Wine style
Mönchberg is characterised as a red wine site. The heavy Keuper and marl soils are associated with powerful, full-bodied and complex red wines, especially from Lemberger. The Gehrnhalde and Berge parcels were previously grown together in the barrique and bottled; today, they are bottled separately because of their differing terroirs.
