Location and classification
The Maximiner Herrenberg is a registered single vineyard in Longuich on the left bank of the Moselle. It belongs to the Probstberg site group in the wine-growing region Mosel and is located in the district of Bernkastel. The official register of vineyard sites lists it under number 410707, with 12.2 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Aspect and soils
The steep vineyard site is oriented to the south to south-south-west. The extended exposure to sunshine thus supports the ripening of the grapes. The Maximiner Herrenberg is characterised by Devonian slate, predominantly dark blue slate; near the adjacent Schweicher Annaberg, red slate inclusions occur locally.
Vines and wines
From the Maximiner Herrenberg, Riesling is documented. Both dry wines and sweet Prädikat wines are produced from it, including Spätlesen and Auslesen. For a plot, vines of around 70 years old, which root deeply, are described.
Name and winemaking
The name refers to the vineyard’s earlier affiliation with the Abbey of St. Maximin. For a Riesling Hochgewächs from the Maximiner Herrenberg, selective hand-picking and spontaneous fermentation are documented.
