Mansfelder Seen-frei

“Mansfelder Seen-frei” is a designation of origin that is not tied to a specific individual vineyard site from the Mansfelder Seen region in the wine-growing region Saale-Unstrut. An area groups together several vineyard sites located close to one another and is to be distinguished from a single site. The name therefore does not refer to a precisely defined plot of vines.

Geographical foundations

The wider wine-growing region of Saale-Unstrut has a continental climate with a mean annual temperature of over 9 °C and comparatively low rainfall. The geological subsoils in the Mansfelder Seen wine-growing area include copper shale.

History and viticulture

Viticulture around the Mansfelder Seen has been documented since the Middle Ages. For the Süßer See, wine-growing is evidenced in 1209; in the 16th century there were terraced slopes planted with vines. For historical cultivation, the construction of terraces and the building of vineyard walls were also part of it, which locally are referred to as stone benches.
