Location and Size
Mandelgraben is a wine-growing site in Brauneberg on the Mosel. The vineyard area covers around 175 hectares and is considered the largest of the Brauneberg wine sites.
Slopes and Soils
The wine site includes both steep slopes and flatter, less steep plots. The soils of the steep slopes consist of slate. A producer description also mentions stony slate with hard quartzites and scree, as well as a vineyard that rises up to the edge of the forest.
Grape Varieties and Wines
Riesling is documented on the steep slopes. In the flatter and sloping areas, in connection with Mandelgraben and Klostergarten, Müller-Thurgau, Kerner and red grape varieties also grow. Pinot Noir is documented from producer-specific wines from the site.
Name and Wine Making
The name Mandelgraben refers to almond trees that used to grow in this area. A 2021 Brauneberger Mandelgraben Pinot Noir was described as a dry quality wine from the Mosel and aged in wooden casks. A producer-specific description links such Pinot Noirs with spice, fruit and finesse.
