Location and classification
Mandelgarten is a single vineyard site in Weisenheim am Berg in the wine-growing region Pfalz. The site belongs to the larger site of Kobnert and to the protected designation of origin Pfalz.
Soils and designation
Sand, terrace gravel and loess are documented for Mandelgarten, with the soils varying greatly within the site. A described parcel south of Battenberg lies at around 180 metres above sea level and is characterised as a cool loess-limestone site. The name goes back to the former local name Mantel for pine trees, which became Mandel in the Palatinate dialect, as well as to the nearby Mandel valley.
Varieties and vinification
Documented wines from Mandelgarten include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and a Weissburgunder-Riesling cuvée. Represented are dry Chardonnay, dry Pinot Gris matured in barrique, dry Riesling Spätlese and a sweet Weissburgunder-Riesling cuvée. For a Mandelgarten Chardonnay, selective hand harvesting, gentle processing, full spontaneous fermentation, as well as fermentation and maturation in French oak are described.
