Location and classification
The Almond Grove is a single-vineyard site of Wachenheim within the greater site of Wachenheimer Schenkenböhl. It is located in the Wachenheim wine-growing area on the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest in the Middle Palatinate, as well as the Pfalz.
Soil and grape varieties
A documented parcel in the Wachenheim Almond Grove lies near the southern municipal boundary of Bad Dürkheim, close to a square shelter made of red sandstone. Deep, sand deposits formed from wind-blown sand originating from loess, and a dense, deep soil structure, characterise the site there. In the Almond Grove, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Chardonnay grow.
Wine and maturation
The documented 2019 vintage of Grauburgunder was produced as a dry white wine in the quality category Deutscher Qualitätswein Pfalz. The grapes were hand-harvested, pressed into the press overnight, fermented with indigenous yeast flora in a small wooden barrel, and matured on the lees for several months. Bottling took place in May 2020.
Name history
The name Almond Grove belongs to the Wachenheim wine-growing names that recall the historical tradition of almond cultivation in the Pfalz.
