Mandelberg

Location and classification

Mandelberg is a vineyard site in Rheinhessen, in the Wonnegau area and within the Großlage Sybillenstein. The registered site extends across the cadastral areas of Alzey-Weinheim and Offenheim. It is also known as Offenheimer Mandelberg and under the names Windberg and Maronoberg.

Topography and soils

The vineyard site lies at around 210 to 271 metres above sea level and is oriented from east to south. Documented soil types include Rotliegend/Rigosol with calcareous clay and fine sand, as well as loess/Pararendzina from calcareous wind-blown sediments. The Rotliegend/Rigosol soils are shallow to medium-depth, stony and store only a limited amount of water available to plants, although they absorb heat well. Loess/Pararendzina is deep, consists of light loam with clayey silt, stores a great deal of water available to plants and offers good rooting conditions.

Wine style

The wines from Rotliegend/Rigosol are associated with herbal, lightly spicy and floral notes, mineral components and aromas of peach, apricot and honey melon. They show lively acidity and potential for ripening. On loess/Pararendzina, wine styles are produced with yellow-fruit aromas as well as apple, peach, pear and citrus notes, moderate acidity, medium body and early drinking ripeness.

History and vineyard register

The site was documented for the year 1427 under the name am mandelwege. The name Mandelberg is linked to an earlier almond tree, the historical term Mantel for pine and Burgmantel. In the vineyard register of Rhineland-Palatinate, Mandelberg is entered under number 730711 in the Großlage Sybillenstein and in the Wonnegau area. The 2024 register data indicate 44.7 hectares in Alzey-Weinheim and 77.9 hectares in Offenheim, for a total of 122.6 hectares of planted vineyard area.
