Lohrberger Hang

Location and classification

The Lohrberger slope lies in Frankfurt am Main-Seckbach in the Lohrpark on the Lohrberg. The south-facing vineyard site belongs to the Rheingau and is its easternmost vineyard site. It is classified as a single-vineyard site without a designation as part of a larger collective site.

Topography and soil

The vineyard is located on a sunny south-facing slope of the Lohrberg at around 180 to 185 metres above sea level. The area covers approximately 1.3 hectares. The vineyard soils map of the state of Hesse assigns the area to soils made from loess substrates.

Vines and wine production

The area is planted exclusively with Riesling. The municipal winery produces around 10,000 bottles from it each year. The Riesling from the Frankfurter Lohrberger Hang is offered as a dry wine; a 2024 vintage is also described as Spätlese. A current bottling contains 0.75 litres and sulphites.

History

Winegrowing in Seckbach has been documented since 882. In 1803, as part of the secularisation process, the vineyard was transferred from the Carmelite monastery in Frankfurt to the city of Frankfurt. As part of the development of the Lohrberg park, it was replanted between 1924 and 1930. In the Hessian vineyard register, the site is listed as “Frankfurter Lohrberger Hang”.
