Liebfrauenberg

Location and classification

The Liebfrauenberg is a registered single vineyard site in the Heßlocher district of Dittelsheim-Heßloch in the Wonnegau. The site belongs to the Großlage Pilgerpfad in Rheinhessen. In the 2024 winegrowing register, it is listed under the code 730607 with 68.1 hectares of planted vineyard area.

Topography, climate and soils

The vineyard plots lie at 170 to 240 metres above sea level and are turned towards the west from north-facing exposure. A high plateau within the site is at around 215 metres. Cool westerly winds contribute to the late ripening of the grapes.

The site comprises shallow to medium-deep, very lime-rich and stony sandy loams from tertiary marine deposits, as well as calcareous clay marl pelosoil. The Rendzina has limited plant-available water storage and restricted rooting depth. The deep clay marl soils are heavy, nutrient-rich, difficult to root in, and only limited in terms of water and air permeability.

Grape varieties and wine style

Riesling is expressly linked to the Liebfrauenberg. For the site, wines from Spätburgunder, St. Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon and Huxelrebe are also documented. Rieslings from the Liebfrauenberg are described as late-ripening, balanced in acidity and mineral-calcareous. Parcels with limestone Rendzina stand for aromatic, lively profiles, while clay marl contributes to fuller-bodied wines with moderate acidity.

History and wine law

In the Middle Ages, the site was home to a Gothic church dedicated to Mary and a pilgrims’ hospital, both built by the Lords of Dalberg. The church’s foundations are said to be preserved beneath the vines; the Mariensäule stands in the wine-growing site. Historical names are “in unser lieben frauen padt” from 1524 and “am Liebfrauenberg” from 1737.

The Liebfrauenberg is listed in the Rhineland-Palatinate vineyard register as an official single vineyard.
