Location and Classification
Liebfrau is a single vineyard site in the cadastral area of Volxheim. It belongs to the Bingen area and to the Großlage Rheingrafenstein in Rheinhessen. According to the wine sites directory for the 2024 vintage, the south-facing vineyard area comprises a planted area of 77.8 hectares.
Soil
The soil consists of marl and pelosol, which originated from calcium-rich, clayey deposits from the Tertiary period. It is deep, contains lime and is clay-rich; it has a high proportion of swelling clays and offers limited water supply and aeration. The nutrient content and lime content are high, while rooting is more difficult.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
In the Volxheim Liebfrau parcels of the Kitzer winery, Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Regent, Dornfelder and Portugieser are documented. The site is associated with full-bodied wines in the Burgundy style. Its soil profile is indicative of dense, rich wines with moderate acidity, a creamy texture, ripe fruit and comparatively low minerality.
Name History
The name Liebfrau is traced back to earlier ownership by a Marian altar or a monastery of Our Lady. The specific institution is not named. Volxheim previously belonged to the Electorate of Mainz and had a Church of Our Lady.
