Location and classification
Letterlay is a registered single vineyard in the municipal and cadastral district of Kröv in the Mosel. The site adjoins Steffensberg and, according to the 2024 vineyard register, comprises a planted area of 16.0 hectares and carries the identification number 410604. It belongs to the Großlage Nacktarsch.
Topography and soil
A documented parcel lies at around 110 to 170 metres above sea level and has a slope of roughly 40 to 70 percent and a southern aspect. The soil is characterised by blue Devonian slate with a high proportion of fine earth. Heavy loam and an occasional influence of Rotliegend rock are also described.
Grape varieties and wine style
Riesling is the predominantly documented grape variety; in addition, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder are planted. The wines are described as full-bodied and substantial. Rieslings from the extremely steep parcels show finesse, while for a documented parcel, minerality, fine acidity and ageing potential are highlighted.
Cultivation and ageing
In a documented planting there are own-rooted vines from 1963 as well as plantings from 1978 and 2012, which are referred to as Selection Massale. For a Kröv Letterlay Riesling of the 2021 vintage, a short maceration time, a slow-cool spontaneous fermentation, gentle ageing in stainless steel, and extended lees ageing are given.
