Location and Landscape
Lenzenberg is a named wine-growing area in Stuttgart-Hedelfingen. It extends across the Hedelfingen and Rohracker districts on the southern slope of the Wangener Höhe. As the south-eastern outcrop of the Wangener Höhe, the site offers views over the Neckar valley to the Schurwald and the Swabian Alb.
Terraces and Vine Plots
The wine-growing area is strongly sloped and includes sections with steep terraces. On a twelve-hectare section, the vineyards were replotted between 1981 and 1983; during this process, terraces were filled and levelled by up to twelve metres in order to enable mechanised cultivation. The planted vineyard area of Lenzenberg totalled 15.2 hectares in 2015.
Grape Varieties and Wines
Trollinger accounted for around 55 percent of the planted vineyard area in Hedelfingen in 2015. The most important varieties listed for the Wangener Höhe and for the Hedelfingen Lenzenberg are Trollinger, Dornfelder, Silvaner and Muscaris; in addition, Lemberger and Pinot Noir are documented in the Hedelfingen terraced locations. According to the local cooperative, the harvest in Hedelfingen is carried out by hand.
Historic Vineyard Custodian Residence
The former vineyard custodian’s house at Lenzenberg served as accommodation and shelter for the vineyard custodians during the ripening period and harvest. The caretakers guarded the vineyards against theft of grapes and damage from birds.
