Lenchen

Location and classification

Lenchen is a single-vineyard site in the cadastral district of Stadecken within the municipality of Stadecken-Elsheim in Rheinhessen. The official regional classification assigns the site to the area of Nierstein and the Grosslage Domherr.

Topography and soils

The wine-growing area comprises 128 hectares and lies at an elevation of around 130 to 200 metres. The hillside site extends from east to north exposure and reaches a plateau at the boundary with the single-vineyard of Spitzberg.

Documented are marl-Pararendzina and loess-Pararendzina. The marl soils consist of calcareous loams and sands from tertiary marine deposits. The loess formed from calcareous material that, during the ice ages, was transported by wind.

Grape varieties and cultivation

In Lenchen, Silvaner, Grauburgunder and Riesling are grown. For individual plots, comparatively low yields are described.

Origin of the name

The name Lenchen may be derived from “Lehen”, a granted or loaned piece of land, or from “Berglehne”, an outdated term for a mountainside.
