Location and Classification
Laurentiuslay is an officially registered wine-growing site in the municipality and cadastral district of Köwerich on the left bank of the Moselle. It is classified as a single site within the quality winegrowing region Mosel, the Bernkastel area, and the large site Sankt Michael. Topography and Soils
Laurentiuslay is a steep vineyard site with a south-westerly orientation and direct sunlight for much of the day. The terrain is characterised by steep, rocky Devonian slate and mineral-rich slate soils. The adjoining water surface of the Moselle reflects sunlight and contributes to a specific microclimate.
Vines and Vinification
In the vineyards of the Stoffel winery in the Köwerich Laurentiuslay, vines with an age of up to 70 years are documented. For Riesling from this site, cultivation with low yields is described. The wines are produced, among other things, with spontaneous fermentation and are aged for a longer period on the lees.
Wine Styles and History
Riesling is documented as being grown in and bottled from Köwerich Laurentiuslay. The site wines appear both dry, with pronounced minerality, and in the sweet style of a Beerenauslese. A wine-growing site in Köwerich Laurentiuslay is also documented in a grant to the Abbey of Echternach from the year 704.
