Location and Topography
Langenmorgen lies to the west of Deidesheim on the south-eastern slope of the Haardt in the Pfalz. The vineyard site is at an altitude of about 150 to 160 metres, has a slope of 14 to 20 per cent and is oriented from the south-east to east-north-east. It opens out towards the Rhine plain.
Climate and Soils
The Haardt protects Langenmorgen from rainfall, cold winds and frost. The microclimate is also characterised by long sunshine duration. The soils consist of calcareous loess loam and loess over weathered red and white Bunter sandstone. The subsoil shaped by sandstone is stony, while the loess can store water and contributes nutrients.
Classification and Grape Varieties
The area classified by the VDP comprises 10.40 hectares. Langenmorgen is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. The classified grape varieties include Riesling and Weissburgunder. Von Winning produces a Riesling from the site which is referred to as VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS.
History and Vinification
Langenmorgen was first mentioned in records in 1491. The name refers to the comparatively long plots; “Morgen” also denotes a historical unit of area. For its Langenmorgen Riesling GG, Von Winning documents a spontaneous fermentation in 500-litre wooden barrels with subsequent lees ageing of around one and a half years.
