Langenberg

Location and classification

Langenberg is located in Retzstadt in a side valley of the Main, north of Würzburg. It belongs to the Middle Main area within the Franconian wine-growing region. As a single vineyard, Langenberg is officially registered; the associated municipal designation is Retzstadt.

Topography and climate

The VDP.ERSTE LAGE® known as Retzstadter Langenberg extends from west to south-east at an altitude of about 240 to 280 metres. The slope gradient is 30 to 62 per cent. Forest on the hilltop protects the site, while the valley cools down at night and warms up quickly during the day.

Soil and grape varieties

Langenberg is planted on shell limestone. The VDP classification comprises 11.00 hectares; for this area, Silvaner and Spätburgunder are listed. The Himmelspfad plot within Langenberg is planted predominantly with Silvaner; the vines were planted in 1963.

Historical development

Winegrowing in Retzstadt has been documented since 814. On the Unterer Langenberg, a Müller-Thurgau vineyard established in 1925 is evidenced. Land consolidation at Langenberg covered ten hectares in 1962; since 1970, earlier site names have been grouped under the name Retzstadter Langenberg.
