Landskrone

Location and Landscape

Landskrone is a vineyard site in Heimersheim, a district of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in the Ahr. The site stretches along the Ahr and, as you look upstream from the Rhine, is the first vineyard. It lies on a volcanic cone and is at an altitude of about 125 metres above sea level.

Soils and Aspect

Classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®, Landskrone has a gradient of 50 to 55 percent, making it very steep, and is criss-crossed with high retaining walls. The soils consist of basalt, slate and loamy loess. The southern aspect, as well as the vineyard walls and soils that store the sun’s warmth during the day and release it at night, shape the site conditions. The Ahr valley is comparatively dry due to its location in the rain shadow of the Eifel and receives around 560 millimetres of rainfall per year.

Grape Varieties and Viticulture

The classified area comprises 9.09 hectares. At the site, the VDP wineries J. J. Adeneuer, Deutzerhof and Nelles work together. Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder are grown. On 15 August 2025, the Nelles winery harvested the first Frühburgunder grapes from the Ahr vintage in Landskrone; the must weight there was 100 degrees Oechsle.

Historical Reference

In 1206, King Philip of Swabia used the distinctive volcanic cone for a royal fortress to protect the road between Frankfurt and Aachen. The name Landskrone refers to the description “crown of the land”.
