Location and Classification
Laacherberg is an officially designated single-vineyard site within the municipal area of Mayschoß in the winegrowing region Ahr. The vineyard site carries the code 110130 and, according to the 2024 vineyard register, comprises a total of 14.7 hectares of planted vineyard area. The former vineyard Silberberg was incorporated into the name Laacherberg.
Topography and Soils
The site lies above the Mayschoß district of Laach and is separated from the Altenahrer Eck by the Ravenley rock ridge. It is oriented to the south to south-west; around 70 percent are steep slopes, 20 percent hillside sites and 10 percent flat terrain. The elevation ranges from 150 to 260 metres above sea level. The soils range from light slate weathering soils to medium-depth, locally sandy loess soils.
Vines and Cultivation
In the small-scale terraces there are, among other things, many old Spätburgunder vines, which are often more than 30 years old. The terraces require extensive manual labour throughout the year; the site conditions and terrace cultivation are associated with low yields. Documented varieties include Spätburgunder, Domina, Portugieser, Regent, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau. The stated breakdown covers approximately 8 hectares of Spätburgunder, 1 hectare each of Domina, Portugieser and Regent, 3 hectares of Riesling and 1 hectare of Müller-Thurgau. In young Laacherberg plantings by Deutzerhof, Chardonnay has also been documented.
Wine Style
The dry Laacherberg Spätburgunder from a producer is described as a powerful red wine in Burgundy style with a mineral character from the stony terraces. Riesling from the site is associated with fine, firm wines from slate weathering soils, while wines from the loess soils are fuller-bodied.
