Kurfürst is an officially registered single vineyard in the Mosel, in the area of Burg Cochem and the Großlage Goldbäumchen. The wine-growing site is located in the municipality and in the cadastral district Ellenz-Poltersdorf, and extends over the districts of Ellenz and Poltersdorf. Its slopes lie opposite Beilstein.

Topography and vineyard area

Kurfürst is documented as a steep-slope site. The officially registered vineyard area in the register status for the 2024 harvest was 42.0 hectares. In the Rhineland-Palatinate vineyards register, the site is listed under number 440132.

Grape varieties and wines

For the Ellenzer Kurfürst, Riesling and Spätburgunder are documented. In plots on the slopes opposite Beilstein, Sauvignon blanc is also cultivated. Documented wines from the site include Riesling Qualitätswein, Riesling Hochgewächs and Spätburgunder Blanc de Noir Qualitätswein. A Riesling, partly originating from the Ellenzer Kurfürst, is designated as a delicately sweet Kabinett wine and a German Prädikatswein.

Cultivation and vinification

The grapes are selectively hand-harvested, depending on ripeness level and weather conditions. Spätburgunder is harvested from the Kurfürst holdings after early white varieties and Riesling later in the harvest sequence. A Riesling, partly originating from the Kurfürst, is fermented spontaneously.
