Location and Orientation
The KUPP vineyard site is located in Ayl in the wine-growing region Mosel. Its south-facing ridge extends in a crescent shape from the Saar towards the Saargau. The VDP-classified site is at around 180 to 220 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of 70 per cent.
Climate and Soils
The ridge links the warmer Saar valley with the cooler Saargau. This creates two climatic zones within the site, contributing to different wine styles. The stony soils consist mostly of weathered blue-grey Devon slate with skeletal material.
Cultivation and Wine Style
The VDP-classified area covers 12.74 hectares. Riesling is listed as the grape variety. Due to the contrasting climatic zones, different wine styles are documented within the vineyard site.
History
A vineyard site called Kupp was first mentioned in writing in 1304. From around 1850 onwards, the wines of Ayler Kupp were considered to be in strong demand; in 1904, a bottle was said to have fetched ten gold marks.
