Location and Climate
Kriegsberg is a vineyard site in the centre of Stuttgart, above Jägerstraße and about 300 metres from Stuttgart main railway station. The hillside planted to the south to south-east lies in the Stuttgart basin climate with mild conditions, long sunshine duration and usually low wind speeds.
Terraces and Soils
The vineyard area of around 1.5 hectares is terraced and shaped by dry stone walls as well as vineyard steps. The historic vineyard structure is partly protected as a cultural heritage monument. The documented soil consists of weathered Keuper with loamy clay.
Cultivation and History
The slope is farmed under the supervision of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Stuttgart and the state building savings bank Landesbausparkasse. Preserving the dry stone walls, steps and hand-accessible vineyard facilities forms part of the care of the protected historic vineyard ensemble. A written archive document from 1577 records the sale of 2 1/8 Morgen of vineyard land at Kriegsberg. Above Jägerstraße there is also a vineyard house dated to 1868.
Grape Varieties and Wines
At Kriegsberg, Riesling is documented. In the described red wine plantings, Lemberger and Cabernet Franc replaced Trollinger. The documented Kriegsberg wines include a dry red wine cuvée made from Lemberger and Cabernet Franc; the 2020 vintage of this cuvée was matured in new barriques.
