Kreuzweg

Location and designations

The Kreuzweg is a vineyard site in the municipality of Leimen in Baden. The site is also referred to as the Leimener Kreuzweg and lies above the Rhine plain. Its aspect faces south-west.

Climate and soils

For the Kreuzweg, a particularly mild climate is described. Forests protect the vines in spring and autumn additionally from cold easterly winds. The deep, heavy loess-clay soils have a top layer up to 20 metres thick, are almost free of stones and are rich in clay. As a result, they retain water well and allow the vines to develop deep rooting.

Grape varieties and wine styles

Wines from Grauburgunder, Gewürztraminer, Spätburgunder and Blaufränkisch are documented from the Leimener Kreuzweg. These include dry Grauburgunder, dry Blaufränkisch, dry Spätburgunder rosé and fruity Gewürztraminer. A dry Grauburgunder is also matured in barrique. The wines are associated with pronounced aromas and a comparatively low, harmonious acidity.

Historical reference

An archival record documents for 1791 to 1792 a hereditary vineyard belonging to Christoph Frey from Leimen in the “Creutzweg”, which is identified with the Kreuzweg. Currently documented bottlings from the winery Adam Müller carry the designation Qualitätswein bestimmter Anbaugebiete (QbA).
