Sites in Rheinhessen
The name Kreuzkapelle refers to two officially listed single vineyards: the Dienheimer Kreuzkapelle in Dienheim and the Guntersblumer Kreuzkapelle in Guntersblum. Both are assigned to the sub-region of Nierstein and the grand cru Vögelsgärten.
Soils and landscape
For both sites, deep, calcareous loess-pararendzinas are described, composed of light loam with a clayey silty component. They have a high capacity for water storage available to plants and good rooting depth. The Guntersblumer Kreuzkapelle lies on the Rhine terrace between Guntersblum and Ludwigshöhe; the site includes hollow ways with loess walls.
Grape varieties and wine style
In the Guntersblumer Kreuzkapelle, the vineyards are planted predominantly with Silvaner, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Burgundy varieties. The wines are associated with notes of yellow fruit, as well as aromas of apple, peach, pear and citrus. Their style is slim to medium-bodied, characterised by mild acidity and geared towards early enjoyment.
Name history
The name Kreuzkapelle goes back to an earlier Kreuzkapelle. According to the description of the Guntersblumer Kreuzkapelle, this chapel is no longer extant.
