Location and climate
Kreuzhalde is the single-vineyard site of Wasenweiler in the municipality of Ihringen in the Kaiserstuhl region of Baden. The south-facing site features a particularly warm, Mediterranean climate.
Terraces and soils
The small-scale site is characterised by locally very steep slopes and small terraces, on which frequently only two or three rows of vines have space. Mineral-rich volcanic weathering material is interspersed with deposits of loess. Because of the steep, fragmented structure, the vineyard is cultivated by hand.
Grape varieties and wines
For Kreuzhalde, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris are documented. The documented wines include dry Pinot Noir as red wine and dry Pinot Gris as white wine, including wines from old vines. The site is associated with wines in the Burgundy style; a documented Kreuzhalde Pinot Noir was matured in barrique.
Name and wine law
The small terraces were historically known as “Halen” in the Middle Ages; the name Kreuzhalde is derived from this. Under Baden wine law, Kreuzhalde is listed as a single-vineyard site, assigned to Ihringen and Wasenweiler.
