Location and classification
The Kreuz is a single vineyard site in the cadastral district of Ockenheim. It belongs to the Großlage St. Rochuskapelle in the Bingen area of the region Rheinhessen.
History and soils
The vineyard site was documented in 1471 under the historical name “an dem crutze”. Its name refers to an old wayside cross at the site. The soil consists of deep, calcareous drift-sand Rigosol, which was formed during the Ice Ages from wind-blown limestone dust and sand. It offers medium water retention, very good aeration, medium to good warming potential and very good root penetration.
Wine character
The wines from the Kreuz tend more towards red wine than white wine. They are associated with intense fruit, mild acidity and dense structure, and they can continue to mature.
