Location
The Kräuterhaus, also known as the Trabener Kräuterhaus, is a vineyard site in the Traben district of Traben-Trarbach in the Mosel. The south-westerly facing hillside comprises around 19 hectares.
Topography and Soil
The site is described as a steep vineyard and forms part of the vineyard landscape of Traben-Trarbach, which is characterised by steep slate slopes. The weathered slate soils have more clay and a higher proportion of loess than neighbouring sites.
Cultivation
Riesling is grown in the Kräuterhaus. The winery Bernd Thomas cultivates together in the Kräuterhaus and Würzgarten sites an area of 6,300 square metres and harvests selectively by hand. The winery Moog has managed a parcel in the Trabener Kräuterhaus on an organic basis since the early 1990s.
Wine Styles and Ageing
Documented Rieslings from the Trabener Kräuterhaus range from gently off-dry through dry Spätlese to sweet Spätlese and Auslese. In addition, there is dry Riesling Sekt. The wines are listed as Mosel Qualitätswein or Mosel Prädikatswein. For Riesling from the slate steep slopes including the Kräuterhaus, gentle maturation in wooden barrels is described; a Trabener Kräuterhaus Riesling Spätlese was matured in a stainless-steel tank.
