Location and classification
The Gundersheimer Königstuhl is an officially designated single vineyard site in Gundersheim in the Wonnegau of the Rheinhessen region. The site belongs to the Bergkloster large site and is located within the municipal cadastral area of Gundersheim. Its area covers 146 hectares. It lies at an altitude of around 150 to 220 metres and has an orientation from east to north.
Soils
The documented soils include loess-Pararendzina. The calcareous, ice-age aeolian sediment forms a deep, light loam with clayey silt. The soil is rich in nutrients, calcareous, moderately warm, well rooted and can effectively store plant-available water.
As another soil type, marl-Pelosol has been recorded from calcareous, clay-rich deposits of the Tertiary sea. It is deep, strongly calcareous and rich in swelling clay, but it has limited water permeability, aeration and rooting depth.
Wine style
Wines from loess-Pararendzina are described as having yellow-fruit aromas of apple, peach, pear and citrus. Their profile is slender and refreshing, with gentle acidity and a medium structure.
On marl-Pelosol, according to the regional description, full-bodied, dense and substantial wines are produced with moderate acidity, a creamy texture and ripe fruit aromas of mango, apricot and honeydew melon.
