Location and classification
Königsschild is an officially recorded single-vineyard site in Langenlonsheim in the Nahe. The vineyards directory lists the site under number 510363, with 14.9 hectares of vines planted in the 2024 vintage wine sites directory.
Topography and soils
The hillside, which is oriented to the south to south-east, lies directly above Langenlonsheim and extends towards the adjacent woodland. It is at an altitude of about 140 to 210 metres, with slope gradients of roughly 10 to 30 percent. It is described as sheltered from the wind and well supplied with water.
The soils include deep loess and loess marl with clay, shell limestone and limestone, as well as, locally, river gravel. According to a producer description, old vines follow the infiltrating water through the loose, calcareous loess, partly to a depth of about 15 metres.
Grape varieties and wine style
Königsschild is planted with Riesling by several producers; in one property, Spätburgunder is also mentioned. Documented dry Rieslings show freshness, minerality and precise fruit. Floral, citrusy, stony and exotic aromas are also described, along with a rounded or soft palate and a persistent finish.
Wine law classification
As a regulated single-vineyard site of the Nahe, Königsschild is listed in the vineyards directory of the Landwirtschaftskammer Rheinland-Pfalz. Wines from the site are marketed, depending on the producer and vintage, either as Qualitätswein from the Nahe or as German Prädikatswein.
