Kochberg

Location and Climate

Kochberg is a designated winegrowing area in Durbach in the Baden region. The Durbach valley and its vineyards are protected from cold air coming down from the Rhine valley by surrounding ridges. The climate is described on site as very mild throughout the year.

Steep Vineyards and Soils

Kochberg is a steep slope facing south-east and south-west. Viticulture in Durbach takes place almost exclusively on slopes with a gradient of around 70 to 80 percent. At Kochberg, granitic weathered material and sandy loam form the soils; they are described as comparatively robust and suitable for Pinot varieties.

Grape Varieties and Cultivation

Spätburgunder is the most important grape variety associated with Kochberg. In addition, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Chardonnay grow there; Muskateller is also cultivated at Kochberg. The steep vineyards require intensive manual work and hand-harvesting, and they usually produce lower yields.

Wine Style

Durbacher Kochberg Spätburgunder, marketed as Qualitätswein from the Baden/Ortenau designated areas, is described as a red wine with a soft, spicy profile. It shows forest-berry fruit, light hints of chocolate and toast, as well as a noticeable tannin structure.
