For the wine-growing site, 11 hectares are documented. The wine-growing register of the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Agriculture lists Knopf as a single vineyard in Friesenheim with 12.8 hectares. Soil and origin of the name
The soil consists of calcareous, clay-rich marl, or Pelosol, from deposits of the Tertiary Sea. It is deep, has a high proportion of clay capable of swelling, low permeability and aeration, as well as a high nutrient content. The strong calcareousness, a medium capacity for warming, and more difficult conditions for root penetration shape the site. The name Knopf is traced back to the rounded shape of the hill on which the vineyard site is located.
