Klosterweg

Location and name

The Klosterweg, also known as the Binger Klosterweg, is a single vineyard in the Dromersheim district of Bingen am Rhein and belongs to the Bingen sub-region in Rheinhessen. The wine-growing site lies to the east of Bingen-Dromersheim on the western slope of the Jakobsberg.

Topography and soils

The vineyard areas are at around 140 to 260 metres above sea level and face south-west to west. Documented are marl, or Pelosol, from calcareous clayey deposits of the Tertiary Sea, as well as clay and Fersiallit from Tertiary deposits of the Upper Rhine.

Viticulture and wine style

The heavy loam and clay soils are considered suitable for warmth-loving grape varieties. In the site, Chardonnay and Scheurebe, among others, are grown; for the Dromersheimer Klosterweg, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer are also documented. The marl and Pelosol soils are combined with full-bodied, dense and richly flavoured wines with moderate acidity. On clay and Fersiallit, full-bodied, dense and deep wines are produced, with acidity and a later ageing profile.

Classification

The name Klosterweg was established in 1951 as a collective-vineyard designation. In the 2024 wine-growing sites directory of Rhineland-Palatinate, the single vineyard is assigned to the large site St. Rochuskapelle in the Bingen, Rheinhessen area. The registered vineyard area in the cadastral area of Dromersheim was 46.3 hectares.
