Klosterkammer

Location and classification

The Klosterkammer is located on the southern edge of Sankt Aldegund in the wine-growing region Mosel. The southeast-facing vineyard site is classified as an Einzelanlage in the area of Burg Cochem and within the Großlage Grafschaft. The official register of vineyard sites lists 2.9 hectares of vines under vineyard site number 440232.

Soils and vine planting

The soils are heterogeneous and range from fine earth and clay-rich, stone-poor as well as moderately heavy subsoil to light grey slate soil. One producer maintains the core area of the original site and nearby parcels on around 1.5 hectares. These plantings are mainly planted with Riesling, some ungrafted and some grafted, with an average vine age of about 50 years. Further parcels are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Spätburgunder and Rosé Chardonnay.

Wines

The Riesling from the aforementioned plantings is used as a base wine for Secco and Sekt. Wines from the St. Aldegunder Klosterkammer are also produced as Qualitätswein and Prädikatswein; Riesling is regarded as the most important grape variety of the site.

Archaeological finds

During excavations, in 1938, foundations of a Roman villa rustica with remains of a hypocaust system were discovered. During work in the vineyards in 1953, a Roman stone chamber grave was also uncovered; its archaeological material is dated to the period around 300 to 350 AD. The work at the time included rigoling, that is deep soil working with a hoe and a spade.
