Klostergarten

Location and classification

The Monastery Garden is an officially designated single vineyard site in Gönnheim in the Mittelhaardt-Deutsche-Weinstraße of Pfalz. The site belongs to the Großlage Hofstück. Its official wine-growing area identification number is 820506; in the 2024 harvest area directory, 34.1 hectares of planted vineyard area are listed.

Site

Gönnheim lies between the Haardt and the Rhine and is described by the municipality as an area with a mild climate that favours the cultivation of white and red grape varieties. In a documented area of the Gönnheim Monastery Garden, the soil consists of heavy loess clay with sand, silt and clay. It has good water-retaining capacity as well as a high lime and nutrient content.

Grape varieties and wine style

For wines bearing the designation Gönnheimer Klostergarten, Weißburgunder, Chardonnay, Grauburgunder, Gelber Muskateller and Scheurebe are documented. The Blaul winery uses the loess-clay area for Weißburgunder and Chardonnay; there, in particular from Burgundy varieties, full-bodied, age-worthy and comparatively low-acidity wines are combined. In the trade, dry and off-dry white wines from the site are documented. For its site wines, the Blaul winery specifies maturation in large wooden casks or barriques; many white wines are fermented spontaneously in large wooden casks there since 2018.
