Klostergarten

Location and Size

The monastery garden is a wine-growing site in the Filzen district of Brauneberg in the wine-growing region Mosel. The site covers 95 hectares.

History and Terrain

The name refers to the former Franciscan nuns’ convent in Filzen. The convent was secularised in 1810; the designation “monastery garden” preserves the connection to its monastic past. The wine site includes steep slopes as well as flat areas and hillside sections. On the steep slopes, the vines grow on slate soils.

Grape Varieties and Cultivation

On the steep slopes, Riesling is grown. In the flat and hillside areas, Müller-Thurgau, Kerner and red grape varieties grow. Hand-harvesting is documented for cultivation on the steep slopes; where the conditions allow, further work can be carried out using cable cars or specialised tracked vehicles. Traditionally, the vines are trained there on poles as Mosel pole training.
