Location and classification
Klostergarten is a legally registered single-vineyard site in the Ahr wine-growing region. The plots lie in the Dernau and Ringen local districts in the municipality of Grafschaft and extend across cadastral boundaries. The vineyard register lists the site under code 110125, with 4.3 hectares in Dernau and 4.8 hectares in Grafschaft-Ringen, for a total of 9.1 hectares.
Marienthal section
The section associated with Marienthal in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler is fully steeply inclined and has a south-westerly to south-easterly aspect. The elevation is around 115 to 240 metres above sea level. Weathered greywacke predominates, and in the lower areas loess and colluvial slope deposits.
Grape varieties and wine style
In the Marienthal section, Spätburgunder, Domina, Dornfelder, Portugieser, Regent, Riesling and Weißburgunder are grown. The upper part is associated with fine-fruited, elegant wines, while the wines on loess and colluvial loam turn out fuller and rounder.
Historical reference
The name Klostergarten is connected with the former Augustinian monastery in Marienthal, founded in 1136, whose surviving buildings stand at the foot of the vineyard site. The former state winery Marienthal with its vineyards and experimental plots was taken over in 2004 by Weingut Kloster Marienthal KG. For the ripening of the wines, the winery uses the historic monastery cellar, which is among the oldest wine cellars in the Ahr valley.
