Location and Layout
The Klosterberg is a named vineyard site in Wiltingen in the Saar area of the winegrowing region Mosel. The site includes steep vineyard areas close to the river, as well as level plots on higher ground.
Soils and History
The deep soils are criss-crossed with quartzite. In the steep areas, sparse slate soils are described. Before the land consolidation, the Klosterberg was divided into smaller vineyard names; the total area was retained after the merging.
Vines and Wines
In the Kelterberg section, vines from the year 1963 are documented. About half of the vines are trained on individual posts; the plantings date from the years 1963 to 1971. From the Klosterberg, Riesling Kabinett, dry Riesling, and Riesling from old vines are documented.
Vinification and Style
The Rieslings are described with notes of wild herbs, a stony mineral character and complexity. A documented Riesling was fermented spontaneously and matured in a stainless-steel tank. Another Riesling from the vines planted in 1963 matured extended on the lees and was bottled unfiltered.
