Klosterberg

Site and Topography

The Klosterberg is the legally recognised wine-growing site Oestricher Klosterberg in the Oestrich district of Oestrich-Winkel in Rheingau. The site lies on a gently rising slope facing south-east and has good exposure to the sun.

Soils and Water Supply

The soils include deep gravel and loam formations with Taunus quartzite. In addition, both shallow and deep gravel and quartzite soils are described, as well as locally loamy, fresh soils. The water supply is considered favourable even in dry years.

Varietal and Wine Character

For the legally designated wine-growing site, Riesling is documented as the grape variety. The wines are associated with a substantial, mineral character; in dry years they show pronounced fruit and extract.

Name and Legal Classification

The name of the site traces back to the former monastery Gottesthal, which was located in this area. Oestricher Klosterberg is listed in the Hesse directory of geographical indications as an official site name and is assigned to the large site Gottesthal.
