Klosterberg

Location

The Klosterberg is a named vineyard site in Lehmen on the Lower Moselle and forms part of the Terrassenmosel landscape. The vineyards lie on the south-facing slope of a side valley, which adjoins the built-up area of the village.

Topography and Soils

The site is comparatively high and is less steep than some other Lehmen vineyard sites. The higher elevation and the westerly openness lead to a harsher local climate with an increased risk of late frost. Winds provide better air circulation around the vines.

Heavier clay and loess soils with moist spring-water zones predominate. Border areas towards the Lehmener Lay show lighter and more shallow weathered Devon soils.

Varieties and Wines

Rivaner and Regent have been documented on the Klosterberg. In addition, Riesling and Grauburgunder are offered in wines bearing the name Lehmener Klosterberg. The range includes gently off-dry Rivaner, Regent Rosé, Regent red wine, Rotling, as well as Riesling wines from Kabinett up to Auslese.

Cultivation

The vineyard site is farmed by several Lehmen wine-growing businesses, including Weinbau Georg Weckbecker, Weingut Hermann Deis and Bio-Terrassen-Weingut Karl Weber. Weinbau Georg Weckbecker also reports on replanting in its Lehmen holdings, to which the Klosterberg belongs, as well as on bottling the wines for direct sales.
