Location and Classification
Kloster Fürstental is an officially recorded wine-growing area in Bacharach in the Middle Rhine. It belongs to the large-scale designation Schloß Stahleck. The 2024 wine-growing areas register lists the site under number 321004 and indicates 5.9 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Topography and Soil
The south-facing site lies at 120 to 220 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of 50 to 60 per cent. Devonian slate is given as the soil. The slate soils contain a higher proportion of clay and fine earth than those of the Bacharach Wolfshöhle.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
The classified grape varieties listed are Riesling and Spätburgunder. Riesling from Kloster Fürstental develops a creamy character through the higher proportion of clay and fine earth. The grapes are also used for sparkling wines; from a designated parcel, ice wine is regularly produced.
Designation and Cultivation
The name recalls a Wilhelmite monastery that stood at this location in the Middle Ages. The VDP lists the site as Bacharacher Kloster Fürstental and as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® with a classified area of 4.37 hectares. In the Ratzenberger vineyards, the vines are planted at greater spacing; permanent ground cover with grasses and wild herbs is intended to improve ventilation and support healthy grapes.
