Kirschgarten

The cherry orchard is a VDP.GROSSE LAGE in Laumersheim in the Pfalz. The vineyard site begins immediately at the edge of the village and stretches uphill into higher, cooler areas. It is southeast-facing, lies at an elevation of 115 to 150 metres, and has a slope gradient of 5 to 15 per cent.

The topsoil consists of loam with loess content and pieces of limestone. In the subsoil there is limestone rock and calcareous marl; the deeper limestone is of tertiary origin. The Orlenberg protects the site from cold westerly winds. Buildings at the edge of the vineyards and a western slope influence the microclimate through wind protection and heat storage.

The classified grape varieties are Riesling, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder. Knipser produces a dry Kirschgarten GG red wine from Spätburgunder, which is aged for 20 months in new French barriques. Since the 2007 vintage, the Mergelweg parcel south of the A6 has been included in Knipser’s Kirschgarten GG. An example is the Kirschgarten GG Magnum.

The classified vineyard area comprises 48.00 hectares. Originally, the site was associated with the former estate of Nonnenhof of the Kirschgarten monastery in Worms. The first documented mention dates from 1654 and gives the name Im Kirschgarthen.
