Kirchgasse

Location and Classification

Kirchgasse is a vineyard site classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE in Lahr in the wine-growing region Baden. It lies on the south side of the Schutterlindenberg, a foothill of the Black Forest. The classified area comprises 4.42 hectares.

Relief and Climate

The site, oriented to the southeast, is situated at around 230 to 270 metres above sea level and has slopes of 30 to 60 percent. The vineyard is divided into small, horseshoe-shaped terraces on a steep south-facing slope. The bowl-like terrain warms up strongly in sunshine; warm south to south-westerly winds through the Burgundian Gate influence the local climate.

Soil and Grape Varieties

The soils consist of loess over a mineral limestone subsoil. The limestone formations are covered by layers of loess and loess marl of varying thickness. For Kirchgasse, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder are listed as the classified grape varieties.

History and Farming

Documented references to wine-growing in the single site go back to the year 1114. Up to the 19th century, the most important access led via an erosion channel towards the village by Martinskirche; historical cadastral maps referred to the southern terraces west of the channel as “An der Kirchgasse”. Weingut Wöhrle states the site as its sole property and farms its vineyards with ecologically certified practices, without chemically synthetic crop protection products, herbicides or fertilisers.
