Kirchgärtchen

Location and orientation

The Kirchgärtchen is located in the cadastral area of Welgesheim in the Bingen area of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The vineyard site comprises 72 hectares, lies at around 115 to 180 metres above sea level, and has orientations from south-east to north-west.

Soil and wine style

The soil is documented as marl, or alternatively pelosoil. The calcareous, clay-containing deposits are linked to the Tertiary sea and are described as deep, strongly calcareous, rich in nutrients and rich in clay capable of swelling. On the clay marl, various grape varieties are grown.

The terroir profile connects the wines with a full-bodied, dense and rich texture, moderate acidity, a creamy mouthfeel and ripe yellow fruit. The minerality is described as comparatively restrained.

Name and classification

The name Kirchgärtchen is either associated with the church in Welgesheim or with a former ecclesiastical property. The Lorsch Codex records for Welgesheim an independent church as early as 1290. In terms of wine law, Kirchgärtchen is classified as a single vineyard within the large vineyard St. Rochuskapelle in the Bingen area of Rheinhessen.
