Location and Classification
The Kirchenstück is a legally registered single vineyard site in Hochheim am Main in Rheingau. It lies east of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul and borders the Domdechaney vineyard site. The site is at an altitude of about 100 to 120 metres, is orientated to the south and has a slope inclination of around 30 percent.
Climate and Soils
The south-facing site receives sunlight throughout the day. The development of Hochheim to the north protects it from cold northerly and downslope winds. The soils include moderately heavy loess loam and clay marl over a deep subsoil that stores water. Further descriptions mention alternating bands of heavier limestone, loess and lighter sand layers.
Grape Variety and Wine Style
For the VDP-classified area, Riesling is specified as the grape variety. Descriptions of the Rieslings from the Kirchenstück cite a light, lively character with a direct, refreshing acidity. Clay marl is associated with mineral notes as well as fruit aromas such as honeydew melon, apricot and peach.
Area and History
The total area of the vineyard site is given as 15.1 hectares, of which 7.98 hectares are allocated to the VDP-classified area. This is designated as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® and is restricted to Riesling. The name refers to its proximity to the Hochheim parish church. The plot has already been documented in 1271 as “Kirchanger” and until 1803 belonged to the Mainz cathedral dean. After secularisation, the property passed to the Duchy of Nassau and later to Prussia. Wines from the vineyard site are already mentioned in official documents for 1823.
