Kirchberg

Location and Climate

Kirchberg is an officially delimited single vineyard in Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl, in the cadastral district of Schelingen. The site has the Atlas number 1220 and lies at an altitude of 300 to 400 metres. Annual rainfall is 800 to 1,000 millimetres, with a mean annual temperature of 9 to 10 °C.

Terraces and Soils

The landscape of the Schelingen Kirchberg is shaped by small terraces. The soils consist of loess and, in parts, volcanic material. In the southern and eastern parts, loess soils are found, while on the northern slopes volcanic rock emerges in the terraces. For some sections, weathering material from basalt as well as volcanic minerals, including carbonatite, are also documented.

Grape Varieties and Wines

At the Schelingen Kirchberg, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder are documented as grape varieties that are grown or produced. Chardonnay is included in a wine with the designation Kirchberg from Vogtsburg-Schelingen. The documented styles include dry Grauburgunder Kabinett and dry Spätburgunder Spätlese.

Farming and Maturation

Work in the vineyard is carried out partly by hand; biodiversity and the terrace landscape are taken into account. For a Grauburgunder from the 2023 vintage from the Kirchberg area, more than one year of ripening in wooden casks and on full lees is documented. The wine was bottled under the name Heiligenberg for a more specifically designated part plot of the Kirchberg. For the land consolidation project Vogtsburg-Schelingen (Kirchberg), implementation of the reorganisation plan was set for 1 October 2025.
