Location and classification
Kirchberg is an officially classified single vineyard in the municipality of Udenheim and is located in the district of Udenheim. Under wine law, it belongs to the Nierstein area and the Großlage Domherr in Rheinhessen. The documented exposure ranges from south to south-east.
Soil and wine profile
The site is characterised by marl and pararendzina with calcareous loams and sands from tertiary marine deposits. The soil profile consists of deep, calcareous clay with a high proportion of source clay, limited water-holding capacity available to plants, and restricted water permeability and aeration. The soil has a high nutrient content and a high level of lime.
On the sand- and clay-marl soils, several grape varieties are grown. The terroir profile connects Kirchberg with full-bodied, expressive wines and balanced acidity. For white wines, aromas of exotic fruit, mango, honeydew melon and apricot are described; for red wines, dark fruit and smoky spice.
History of the name
The name of the site is linked to the mountain church on the Udenheim hill. The oldest part of the church, the three-storey west tower, dates from the 12th century.
