Location and extent
The Kirchberg, also known as Würzburger Kirchberg or Heidingsfelder Kirchberg, is the house wine-growing site of Würzburg-Heidingsfeld. The vineyard lies on the north-eastern slope of the Katzenberg and extends below the A3 from the Autobahn bridge Randersacker/Eibelstadt to the exit Würzburg-Heidingsfeld.
Soil and slope
The vineyard areas cover around 50 hectares. The slopes, which are predominantly oriented to the north to the east, have a moderate gradient. The soil is described as mineral-rich Muschelkalk.
Cultivation
Around 15 producers farm the wine-growing site, mostly in a cooperative organisation. The Kirchberg was not the subject of a land consolidation process and has biologically diverse vineyard structures. For two parcels, yield reduction, extensive manual work and mechanical weed control instead of herbicides are described.
Grape varieties and wines
The documented grape varieties include, among others, Silvaner, Kerner, Bacchus, Müller-Thurgau, White Burgundy as well as several red varieties. Dry Silvaner is documented, as is a Kerner described as fruity and aromatic with lively acidity.
