Kirchberg

Location and context

The Bensheimer Kirchberg is a single vineyard on the Kirchberg, the hill that shapes the character of the townscape of Bensheim in the wine-growing region Hessische Bergstraße. The hill is used as a wine-growing and day-trip area.

Climate

Hessische Bergstraße is protected from harsh north and east winds by the Odenwald. The region has a long growing season, about 12 °C average annual temperature, more than 1,700 hours of sunshine each year, and around 690 millimetres of rainfall per year.

Soil and grape variety

The vineyard is on weathered rock with limited natural water storage capacity. By incorporating compost, water retention is improved. The area is almost entirely planted with Riesling.

Wine style

The wines from the Kirchberg are described as having delicate fruit and juiciness. A documented bottling is a dry Riesling quality wine from Hessische Bergstraße.
