Location and classification
The Kauzenberg is listed as an official single vineyard within the wine-growing region of Nahe, the Nahetal area and the Grosslage Kronenberg. In the 2024 vineyard register, the site of the municipality Bad Kreuznach is assigned to this location. The planted vineyard area covers 13.1 hectares.
Landscape and soils
The vineyards lie to the north-west of the Nahe in the landscape area of Kreuznacher Hardt. The slopes above the Nahetal near Bad Kreuznach are used for viticulture. For the Kauzenberg, red and yellow sandstones with a gravel covering are documented. In the wider Kreuznacher Hardt, hard volcanic rocks such as porphyry and porphyrite also occur.
Climate and history
The Nahe near Bad Kreuznach is protected from cold winds by the Hunsrück. The area is described as having mild temperatures, plenty of sunshine and a comparatively dry valley climate. In 1820, Andreas van Recum, who is named as the owner of the Kauzenberg, had an observation pavilion built, which is known as a tea temple.
Grape varieties and wine styles
Documented wines with the designation of origin Kreuznacher Kauzenberg include Riesling and Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder). Both a dry Riesling and a sweet (off-dry) Pinot Noir are evidenced; another Kauzenberg Riesling is offered as a dry wine from the single vineyard.
