Location and classification
The Katzenkopf is a vineyard site in the municipality of Sommerach in the winegrowing region Franconia. It is located on the Main bend, known as the wine island. The VDP classifies the Sommerach Katzenkopf as VDP.FIRST SITE with an area of 89 hectares; the classified grape variety listed is Silvaner.
Topography and soils
The described plots have a south-westerly exposure, elevations of 230 to 245 metres above sea level and a slope gradient of around 30 percent. The VDP describes a loamy-marl weathering layer with limestone marl. Further descriptions mention shell limestone with a fine layer of sand, as well as sandy shell limestone soil. Within the site there are also areas with shell limestone close to the surface and skeleton-rich soils of loamy-marl clay, which are partly mixed with sand.
Wines and vinification
Wines from the Katzenkopf documented include those made from Silvaner, Riesling and Spätburgunder. A dry Silvaner from the site is described as mineral, with aromas of yellow fruit, length and a mineral backbone. Another Katzenkopf Silvaner is fermented spontaneously and shows subtle notes of wood. The Silvaner from the sub-plot Augustbaum is fermented and matured in used wooden casks.
Microclimate and history
A separate local microclimate is described for the Katzenkopf. The sub-area Wilm is mentioned in a deed of grant from the year 1084, relating to the vineyards in Sommerach and the monastery of Münsterschwarzach. The Gewann Katzenkopf was also recorded in a notification dated 7 August 2023 in the official vineyard register.
