Katzenberg

Location and Terroir

The Katzenberg is a designated vineyard area in the municipality of Weingarten (Baden) and one of the three wine-growing areas of the municipality. The vineyards on the Katzenberg are located on the sunny southern slopes. The soils are described as stony limestone soils.

Grape Varieties

The geological and climatic conditions in Weingarten are considered favourable for Burgundian grape varieties and other typical German grape varieties. Typical varieties mentioned include Burgundian grape varieties and Riesling; Müller-Thurgau is also grown on site.

Development and Cultivation

Wine-growing has been carried out in Weingarten for centuries. After the Second World War, following a land consolidation, a large-scale vineyard site was created on the Katzenberg in the mid-1950s. Previously, there had been small, partly steep plots there, which were cleared with heavy equipment. Today, machine work is possible on larger areas, while hand work in the vineyard is still required.
